Registration Advising for Electrical Engineering
EE Transfer Guidelines
What to Do
Transfer Credit
Awarding of transfer credit is done by the Office of Admissions and Records (956-381-2201). Lower level general education courses are normally evaluated automatically. Individual academic departments sometimes make recommendations on upper level or specialized courses; however, ultimately the credit is assigned by Admissions and Records.
Since it takes time for your transcript to be evaluated, you will probably need to do your first UTPA registration without the official results. You and your EE faculty advisor will have to make a preliminary assessment of what courses you are likely to get credit for.
Engineering Courses from ABET-accredited BSEE programs
Generally we attempt to recommend credit for these courses wherever possible. Courses can fall into one of three categories:Courses that are an exact match for one of our courses. These transfer and appear on your UTPA transcript with our course number.
Courses that can count toward the degree but are not an exact enough match to be given the same number as a UTPA course. In these cases, we modify (substitute) your degree plan to use the course you have.
Courses that do not fit into our degree plan. These will be listed your transcript (usually as "NON-ADV ENGR") but will not count toward your degree.
When seeking transfer credit for engineering courses, you will need to provide course descriptions from your old college catalog, provide a syllabus if available, and be able to discuss the course content with your advisor in a convincing way. Your advisor and a committee of EE faculty will make recommendations, which are subject to approval by the department chair, dean, and admissions and records.
Engineering Technology Courses
Generally, because of the different prerequisites and course objectives in engineering technology programs, we cannot accept technology courses except in special cases:Courses which are identical to those taken by BSEE majors at the same institution, or which have a Texas common course number equivalent to one of our courses, can be counted.
It may be possible to substitute technology courses for ENGR 1101 and/or ENGR 1221
It may be possible to get credit or a substitution for ELEE 2130 Digital Systems I Lab, if the topics covered are comparable.
It may be possible to have the laboratory part of ELEE 2420 waived, if the topics covered are comparable.
Courses that are not accepted will still appear in some form on your transcript, but will not count toward your degree.
Non-engineering Courses
Recommendations for transfer credit for courses outside of engineering must be made by the departments teaching the subjects involved. Most lower division english, math, history and government, etc is evaluated automatically. Any disputes must be handled through the Office of Admissions and Records.
